Contour Venture Partners Has Put $2.8B in Revenue Through Its Seed-First Model

The 19-year-old New York firm, investing out of its fifth fund, has notched 33 exits from a portfolio heavy on fintech and enterprise SaaS.

About Contour Venture Partners

Published

Contour Venture Partners closed its fourth seed fund at $82 million in 2020 [FinSMEs, 2026]. It is now investing out of a fifth fund and a separate growth vehicle, Contour Opportunity Fund III, announced in late 2022 [Contour Venture Partners, 2026].

The math behind the 19-year-old New York firm is straightforward. Write $500,000 to $2 million checks into seed-stage companies, lead the round, and repeat across financial services, enterprise software, and digital media tech [Perplexity Sonar Pro, 2025].

The output, according to the firm's own tally, is a portfolio of 105 companies generating a combined $2.8 billion in annual revenue. Those companies employ over 11,500 people [Perplexity Sonar Pro, 2025].

A Thesis Forged in 2005

Founders Jason Finger and Matt Gorin started Contour in 2005. This was a time when New York's startup ecosystem was a fraction of its current size.

Gorin, a managing partner, was on the launch team of Promontory, a fintech later sold for an estimated $2.5 billion [VCSheet, 2026]. The firm's early bet was that New York would become a capital hub for specific verticals beyond consumer social.

Their portfolio now shows that focus: 69 investments in enterprise applications and 19 in FinTech, according to sector trackers [Tracxn, 2026]. Contour has made 235 investments total, leading 47 of those rounds [PitchBook, 2026] [Pipeseed, 2026].

The Portfolio Scale Argument

The firm's differentiation rests on aggregation. By consistently acting as a lead or co-lead seed investor for nearly two decades, it has built a sprawling network with measurable economic heft.

Its reported 33 liquidity events include exits like Datadog, Bench, and Contently [Crunchbase, 2026]. Recent additions include the sale of Movable Ink to STG and Ambient Fuels to Electric Hydrogen in 2025 [Perplexity Sonar Pro, 2025].

For founders, the pitch is access to a concentrated pool of peer companies and operators within Contour's wheelhouse.

  • Sector concentration. Nearly two-thirds of its investments are in enterprise applications, creating built-in referral and partnership channels within the portfolio [Tracxn, 2026].
  • Operator-led sourcing. The three-partner team is described as combining operator, institutional VC, and ecosystem builder experience. It aims to find deals through execution knowledge rather than spray-and-pray [VCSheet, 2026].
  • Revenue proof point. The $2.8 billion aggregate portfolio revenue figure is a tangible, if macro, signal of portfolio company scale for a seed-stage firm [Perplexity Sonar Pro, 2025].

The Seed-Stage Crowd

The obvious counterfactual is market saturation. New York's seed landscape is now dense with specialist funds and solo capitalists.

Contour's check size range of $500,000 to $2 million also places it in direct competition with a growing number of micro-VCs and multi-stage firms doing seed deals. Its longevity is an advantage.

The firm must continually prove its value-add beyond capital to win allocations in hot rounds. The firm's response appears to be a doubling down on its established sectors and its lead-investor stance. This model requires deep, hands-on reserves of partner time.

Contour's latest funds suggest limited partners are still buying the thesis. The firm has raised seven funds in total [Crunchbase, 2026].

The close of Contour Venture Partners IV at $82 million and the subsequent launch of Fund V and the growth-oriented Contour Opportunity Fund III indicate a steady capital supply [FinSMEs, 2026] [Contour Venture Partners, 2026].

The question for Gorin and Finger is whether a 19-year-old, seed-first model can maintain its strike rate. The early-stage field has never been more crowded.
