Without's First 500 Pairs of Sunglasses Anchor a Bet on the Impossible Plastic

The Pune-based social enterprise is moving from consumer goods to industrial pellets, using a proprietary process to recycle multi-layered packaging.

The most honest piece of climate hardware is often the one you can hold in your hand. For Anish Malpani, that was a pair of sunglasses. In February 2023, his company Without sold its first batch of 500 pairs, made from recycled multi-layered plastic chip packets, and they were gone in a week [Indian Express, February 2023]. It was a tidy proof of concept: people would buy products made from so-called 'unrecyclable' waste. The real test, however, is whether you can build an industrial business behind the sunglasses.

The wedge is a social supply chain

Without, the flagship brand of social enterprise Ashaya, started with a difficult material and a difficult social problem. Multi-layered plastic (MLP), the metallized film used in snack bags and sachets, is a recycling nightmare. It's lightweight, contaminated, and economically pointless to process through conventional means. Ashaya's wedge is pairing the technical challenge with a social model, sourcing this waste directly from informal waste pickers' collectives like SWaCH Pune [The Better India, March 2023]. The idea is to increase the value captured by the pickers while securing a consistent feedstock. The initial sunglasses, reportedly generating Rs 11 lakh in revenue in their first week, were the consumer-facing tip of this spear [Indiaspora]. The core technology, however, is aimed at the factory, not the fashion rack.

Scaling the chemistry

The company's longer-term bet rests on VerdiCycle, a patented chemo-mechanical process it developed to break down MLP and blended textiles [without.live]. Operating at a relatively low 120°C using water-based chemistry, the process is designed to separate these complex materials into purified streams [without.live]. The outputs are branded industrial feedstocks: VerdiFLX recycled polyolefin pellets, VerdiPTA (purified terephthalic acid), and composite materials for construction [reset-connect.com]. After delays, a demonstration plant in Pune called 'The Cradle' launched in late 2025 to prove this at a larger scale [without.live]. The transition is stark: from a direct-to-consumer accessory to a business-to-business materials supplier.

This pivot is reflected in the company's early backing, which leaned on grants rather than traditional venture capital. Support came from the Startup India Seed Fund, Social Alpha, the H&M Foundation, and The Incubation Network [YourStory SocialStory, April 2023]. A pre-seed round was noted in April 2024, though the amount and lead were undisclosed [CB Insights]. The funding profile underscores the hybrid nature of the venture, straddling social impact and deep-tech hardware.

The company's leadership and technical development are centralized around founder Anish Malpani, a former corporate-finance professional who moved from the U.S. to India to start Ashaya in 2020 [The Better India, March 2023]. Dr. Jitendra Samdani is listed as the research scientist leading the technical work [isc3.org].

Where the unit economics get real

The ambition is clear, but the path from a sold-out sunglasses batch to a profitable materials supplier is lined with operational risks that go beyond chemistry.

  • Feedstock consistency. The social supply chain is a core differentiator, but securing thousands of tons of clean, sorted MLP from informal networks is a monumental logistics challenge. Contamination or supply volatility could choke the plant.
  • Offtake certainty. Selling recycled pellets into industrial markets means competing on price and performance with virgin plastic and established recyclers. Brand partnerships or long-term purchase agreements will be essential to de-risk scale-up.
  • Capital intensity. Hardware recycling plants are not cheap. The grant and pre-seed funding that fueled the R&D and pilot phase will need to be followed by significantly larger rounds to build commercial capacity, testing investor appetite for a social enterprise in a capital-heavy sector.

The company has set a goal to process an additional 8 tons of MLP and produce a hundred thousand recycled products by early 2026 [transform.global]. Hitting that target with its new plant will be the first real indicator of operational cadence.

Running a back-of-the-envelope check: if those 8 tons are all converted into VerdiFLX pellets, and assuming a conservative market price for recycled polyolefins, the revenue would be in the low six figures (USD). That's a start, but it's the slope of the line after that point that matters. The real metric is the cost per ton processed versus the revenue per ton sold. For Ashaya to win, that spread needs to beat the incumbent, which isn't another recycler,it's the landfill. The company must prove its process is cheaper than the cost of dumping and more valuable than the low-grade 'downcycling' that often befalls complex plastics. That's the calculation that will determine if the sunglasses were just a clever story or the opening act for a new material stream.
