Photon Bridge’s Wafer-Scale Lasers Target the AI Data Center Bottleneck

The Eindhoven startup’s modular approach to integrating high-power lasers with silicon photonics aims to simplify manufacturing for co-packaged optics.

About Photon Bridge

The most expensive real estate in the world is not in Monaco or Manhattan. It’s the few square millimeters on a silicon photonics chip reserved for the laser, the single component that turns an optical interconnect from a clever idea into a usable wire. And for the engineers trying to pack more of those wires into AI data centers, the physics are getting expensive.

Photon Bridge, an Eindhoven-based startup, is betting its modular laser platform can lower the rent. Its core technology, a so-called cantilever waveguide, is designed to act as a precision bridge. On one side sits the raw optical power of III-V semiconductor materials, the kind used in high-performance lasers. On the other is the scalable, CMOS-friendly world of silicon photonics. The company’s proposition is straightforward: by cleanly separating the active laser source from the passive silicon circuit, it can simplify the manufacturing hell that often throttles photonics scaling. The goal is a “digital light engine” that can be stamped out at volume, providing the multi-wavelength lasers needed for the dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) interconnects inside and between AI accelerator racks [PhotonDelta, Apr 2022].

A manufacturing-first photonics bet

Most photonics integration tries to force high-performance materials onto a silicon substrate, a tricky and often yield-limited marriage. Photon Bridge’s cantilever approach is more of a strategic cohabitation. The III-V laser chips and the silicon photonic integrated circuits are fabricated separately in their respective commercial foundries. The proprietary waveguide structure then reaches out to couple the light from the laser into the silicon circuit with high efficiency. The company claims this de-integrated, modular flow is designed for manufacturing “from day one,” aiming for wafer-scale processing and high-volume production [Photon Bridge, retrieved 2026].

The technical milestone they point to is a specific power output: more than 30 milliwatts per optical channel at the edge of the silicon chip, achieved in continuous-wave operation at room temperature and, crucially, at wafer scale [Semiconductor Today, Feb 2026]. In the world of chip-scale lasers, that’s a meaningful number. It suggests each tiny laser is powerful enough to be split across multiple channels or travel further through a lossy optical link, which directly translates to needing fewer lasers per rack. For a hyperscaler building a data center, the unit economics of photonics start with how many joules of light you can reliably get per dollar of capex and per square millimeter of chip.

Building a partner ecosystem, not just a chip

The company’s path to market relies less on selling a finished module and more on becoming a preferred integration partner. Its announced collaborations map out a supply chain. The Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC) is the designated III-V laser foundry partner [OFC, Mar 2026]. Dutch packaging specialist PHIX is working with Photon Bridge to advance the assembly of its laser sub-assemblies for co-packaged optics [Laser Focus World, retrieved 2026]. And optical module maker OE Solutions was announced as a lead partner for next-generation tunable laser assemblies [Perplexity Sonar Pro Brief]. This partner-led strategy is a pragmatic acknowledgment of the photonics industry’s complexity; moving fast means plugging into existing manufacturing expertise rather than trying to rebuild it all.

The leadership team reflects this blend of deep tech and commercial pragmatism. Co-founders Rui Santos (CTO) and Xaveer Leijtens provide the photonics research backbone from Eindhoven’s ecosystem. The company brought in Paul Marchal as CEO in 2025 during a rebrand from Photon IP. Marchal’s background is in semiconductor packaging and interconnect technology; the company characterizes him as an inventor of through-silicon via (TSV) technology associated with modern high-bandwidth memory [Perplexity Sonar Pro Brief]. It’s a relevant history. Just as TSVs were a critical enabler for stacking memory chips, Photon Bridge is working on the interconnects that will tie those stacks together at the speed of light.

The traction and the funding picture

The company’s most recent public funding announcement is a €4.75 million seed round from January 2025, led by Innovation Industries with participation from Faber, BOM, and PhotonDelta [Photon Bridge, Jan 2025]. A later report from Sifted in October 2026 mentioned a €10 million seed round, a figure that has not been reconciled with the earlier announcement and should be treated as unconfirmed [Perplexity Sonar Pro Brief]. The earlier capital has evidently been used to hit technical milestones and establish the foundational partnerships.

Partnership Role Announced
CPFC III-V laser foundry partner March 2026 [OFC, Mar 2026]
PHIX Photonic packaging & assembly April 2026 [Laser Focus World, retrieved 2026]
OE Solutions Lead partner for tunable laser modules October 2025 [Perplexity Sonar Pro Brief]

Where the light could dim

The ambition is clear, but the road for a hardware startup in this space is paved with formidable incumbents and physics challenges. The primary competitive pressure doesn’t come from other startups, but from the established giants of optical components and the internal silicon photonics teams at the very hyperscalers Photon Bridge aims to supply. Companies like Intel, Broadcom, and Cisco-owned Acacia have vast resources and existing relationships. Photon Bridge’s answer is its modularity and manufacturing focus, arguing that its platform can offer better performance and cost at scale by not being locked into a single, monolithic integration path.

The other, more subtle risk is in the timing of architectural shifts. The industry is moving toward co-packaged optics (CPO), where the optical engine sits right next to the compute silicon. This is Photon Bridge’s stated target. But if CPO adoption is slower than expected, or if alternative interconnect technologies gain traction, the market window could shift. The company’s partnerships with module makers like OE Solutions are a hedge, providing a route to market for traditional pluggable optics while the CPO future solidifies.

The next twelve months

For Photon Bridge, the immediate horizon is about moving from validated prototypes to qualified products. The open roles for a Packaging Engineer and a Process Integration Engineer signal a focus on hardening the manufacturing flow [Perplexity Sonar Pro Brief]. The key milestone to watch will be the announcement of a first design-win or pilot deployment with a systems company or hyperscaler, proving that its performance and cost equations work outside the lab.

A back-of-the-envelope calculation highlights the stakes. A modern AI cluster can require tens of thousands of optical links. If Photon Bridge’s platform can reduce the cost per laser channel by even a few dollars while improving yield, the savings at hyperscale quickly reach tens of millions. More importantly, by providing a scalable source of high-power, multi-wavelength light, it could remove a key bottleneck to packing more optical I/O onto a chip. The company’s ultimate test won’t be beating other startups, but proving its cantilever platform is more manufacturable and cost-effective than the integrated photonics approaches being pursued by a company like Intel. That’s a high-beam target, but in the data center’s dark silicon, every milliwatt counts.
